Projects

Symmetry and Low-Dimensionality Mine-and-Craft for Efficient Spin Manipulation and Photoconversion (SymDim)

Simetria y baja dimensionalidad como plataforma para materiales espintrónicos y fotoconversión)

Profile of the candidate: We seek for a candidate desiring to get a multidisciplinary training on transport properties and optical (ellipsometry, plasmonics, etc.) measurements, and understanding of electron-correlated metallic systems and thin film growth. This combination should provide a solid scientific broad background. The candidate’s scientific education will be framed within the PhD program of “Materials Science“ of UAB (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) and complemented with participation to appropriate Schools to boost the education and networking skills. Other courses will include training on a) IPR protection, b) Communication skills and c) Building leadership and team management. Regular presentations at weekly group’s meeting and International conferences shall provide adequate training.

Engineering complex inorganic materials for energy applications (ECIME)

Profile of the candidate: Within the ECIME project, the student will focus on "Rolling up 2D graphene-like materials". Graphene-like 2D materials based on inorganic layered structures are receiving a great deal of attention due to their fascinating properties which often differ from the bulk material. The properties of the 2D layers can be tuned by creating points of curvature. Towards this end we have shown that rolled up 2D layers can be grown by filling the chosen compounds in the cavities of carbon nanotubes (DOI: 10.1002/adma.201305169; DOI: 10.1021/acsnano.8b01638). The student will join an interdisciplinary group and be in charge to synthesize and characterize the resulting tubular van der Waals heterostructure by several complementary techniques. The student will also investigate the properties of the resulting materials as thermoelectrics and for energy storage (supercapacitors).

Chemical approaches to prepare functional oxide membranes towards versatile photovoltaic devices

Profile of the candidate: This PhD proposal aims to develop a new photovoltaic architecture based on stable, abundant and non-toxic oxide components suitable to be integrated in flexible and wearable devices. The new breakthroughs expected from this project with high gain perspective in the field of photovoltaics may become crucial in the next generation of electronic devices. To develop the project, the candidate will learn how to prepare inorganic thin films and nanomembranes by cost-effective chemical-based techniques combined with nano-transfer printing technologies. The researcher will also be involved in device fabrication and characterization using a broad variety of basic and advanced characterization techniques. The successful candidate will receive a strong multidisciplinary training and work in a dynamic team.
